A Comprehensive Guide to Selecting Certified Natural Gemstones
Buying a natural gemstone—whether for Vedic astrology (Jyotish) or bespoke fine jewellery—requires an understanding of quality, treatments, and authenticity. At Navkar Jewels, we believe in complete transparency.
1. The 4 Cs of Colored Gemstones
Unlike diamonds, which are graded primarily for brilliance and lack of color, colored gemstones follow unique evaluation standards:
• Color: The most critical factor. The finest gemstones exhibit vivid, saturated hues that are neither overly dark nor washed out.
• Clarity: Natural gemstones are formed deep within the earth over millions of years and naturally contain internal features known as “inclusions.” Completely flawless stones without any inclusions are exceptionally rare and often synthetic.
• Cut: A master cut maximizes the gemstone’s natural color, eliminates optical extinction (dead spots), and enhances luster.
• Carat Weight: Gemstone density varies by mineral species. For instance, a 1-carat ruby will appear visually smaller than a 1-carat emerald due to differing specific gravity.
2. Natural vs. Treated vs. Synthetic Stones
• 100% Natural & Unheated: The most precious and astrologically potent gemstones. They have undergone no laboratory treatments, heating, or chemical diffusion.
• Heated/Treated: Many commercial gemstones in the market undergo high-temperature heat treatment or glass filling to enhance color and hide cracks. While common in budget jewellery, treated stones are not recommended for astrological remedies.
• Synthetic (Lab-Created): Artificially grown in a laboratory with identical chemical properties, but lacking rarity, investment value, and planetary energy.
3. The Importance of Origin
A gemstone’s geographic origin significantly influences its value and prestige:
• Blue Sapphire (Neelam): Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Kashmir are renowned for the finest cornflower and royal blue hues.
• Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj): Ceylon is world-famous for its bright, warm golden-yellow luster.
• Emerald (Panna): Colombian and Zambian mines produce the world’s most sought-after deep green gems.
• Ruby (Manik): Old Burmese and African (Mozambique) rubies command top global value for their vibrant pigeon-blood tones.
4. Certification & Authenticity Guarantee
Never purchase a high-value gemstone based on verbal claims. Every fine gemstone at Navkar Jewels is accompanied by an independent laboratory certificate (GIA, IGI, or reputed Government-recognized gemmological laboratories) verifying its natural origin, color, dimensions, and treatment status.
